Movil File Search tool for Windows (more info)

Why and How.

In many companies bulk of information is stored in files on network servers. In order to efficiently use that information, users should be able to perform fast content searches. Content management solutions, available from several vendors, are sometimes too expensive, not scalable enough, or not powerful enough to justify their deployment. On the other side, Microsoft Indexing Service, that's included in Windows, is a powerful and proven if under-utilized technology.

Microsoft Indexing Service is an easily customizable, low-overhead tool. By executing on the background with low priority, and listening to file change notifications issued by Windows, Microsoft Indexing Service avoids expensive (in terms of resource utilization) full disk re-scans.

Movil File Search makes use of Microsoft Indexing Service to perform very fast and powerful (including full-text) searches across the network, as well as on local system.

Microsoft Indexing Service should be configured in such way that each network server houses index of it's own files. This approach provides for high scalability (search queries are sent to multiple servers), low network utilization (no remote file scans by Microsoft Indexing Service), and improved reliability (if a single server goes down, only index of files on that server becomes unavailable).

Movil File Search is a client-side solution. It's integrated in Windows Explorer. Movil File Search user interface combines standard Windows widgets with web browser-based interface, to implement an intuitive and powerful tool.
